T12 Response to feedback and next steps — Worked example

2026 digital edition · Dr Naeem Aziz DGM FRCP · 2 min read

Hypothetical worked example

Read with chapter 18

Separate understanding the decision, correcting facts, further development and any formal review or appeal. Check deadlines immediately.

Decision

A hypothetical applicant is told that the evidence did not make their contribution to an improvement project clear. The example supplies no national appeal timetable and does not imply that this is the only reason for a decision.

Understanding the finding

The doctor asks whether the concern is unclear attribution, insufficient evidence of the work or a wider capability issue. These require different responses.

Evidence and correction

The existing project record distinguishes the doctor's tasks from those of the team. If that record was omitted or misunderstood, the doctor identifies the precise point and asks how a correction should be considered. No retrospective endorsement is invented.

Development response

If the evidence genuinely does not show the claimed capability, agree a proportionate opportunity and feedback plan. Repeating a course is not automatically the appropriate answer.

Formal process

Check the current route and time limit on receiving the decision. A request for clarification should not be assumed to pause a deadline. Seek appropriate advice if considering a review or appeal.

Review

Record what is being challenged and what is being developed. Keep the plan realistic and supported. An adverse decision should lead to a clearer next step, without a promise that further effort will guarantee a different outcome.
