Portfolio Pathway &
Specialist Registration
Decide whether the route serves your career, map the current standard, build admissible evidence and prepare for every outcome.
A senior SAS contractual grade. It does not automatically confer Specialist Register entry.
Reached through approved training/CCT or an eligible Portfolio Pathway/CESR route.
A separate recruitment decision. Register entry enables relevant applications but is not a job offer.
What do you need to do now?
Decide, plan, evidence, submit and respond
For a complete foundation, work through Modules 1–12. If an application is already under way, use the route finder and the readiness check to identify the most important gap. Each module includes detailed teaching, six scenarios, a complete PDF, sources and practical workbook links.

Progress storage is off. Knowledge checks still work, but results are not remembered.
Twelve modules from career decision to outcome
Use the sequence for a full project or open the module that matches today’s decision.

Work across career choice, curricula, evidence, submission and outcome scenarios. This cannot assess a real portfolio or predict a GMC decision.
Use the right national and specialty route
The GMC standard is UK-wide, while access to development time, peer support, placements and funding differs by nation, employer and specialty.
Use the specialist body that evaluates the standard
The GMC makes the final decision. Colleges and Faculties may publish specialty resources and evaluate submitted applications for the GMC, but their pre-application support and portfolio-review boundaries differ.
Build the career around the application
Use the Careers guide for SAS and Specialist roles, Leadership in Practice for generic capabilities, Wales progression for the separate employment route, and Wellbeing when the project affects health.
Use the live standard
Curricula, specialty guidance, forms, fees and evidence policy change. Open the current documents before acting.
Prepare for appraisal and maintain your portfolio
Map whole-practice evidence, plan feedback and build a realistic PDP. Keep appraisal, employment progression and specialist registration distinct.
